Dawn Chorus for Piccolo, 2 Flutes, Clarinet, Bassoon, Violin, and Viola
The score and parts are available on this page of the IMSLP, You can listen here (it's about five minutes long, and it might even give you a hopeful smile).
Weights and Measures: Scale Melodies for Recorder (and other instruments)
I also made transcriptions of the recorder version for viola and for bass clef instruments of every stripe (the lowest pitch is F).
You can listen to performances of some of these here.
The music for this set of scale pieces is available on this page of the IMSLP.
May 2021 UPDATE: I have set these pieces as duets (recorder and violin)! You can find them through the IMSLP link, or through this post.
2023 UPDATE
Any and all of the versions work perfectly well on the viola d'amore!
She Calls it a Fairy Tree for Mezzo-soprano, oboe, bassoon, viola, and double bass
In an Old House in Paris
September 26, 2020
This is an antiphonal piece that follows the rhythms found in the text of Madeline, a children’s book written in 1939 by Ludwig Bemelmans. The words that correspond to the musical phrases can be found in the book, which can be found in many libraries and bookstores.
During this time of social distancing, musicians have been looking for ways to play together by way of video communication. Truly synchronous two-way communication is not yet possible, so this piece explores the horizontal musical communication that is operative in antiphonal music.
I have found that the piece works better on a direct communication platform like FaceTime than it does on a conference-based platform like Zoom.
I have made modular settings so that this piece can be played by two violins, two clarinets, violin and clarinet, two violas, viola and guitar, oboe and guitar, flute and guitar, violin and guitar, violin and viola, viola and cello, oboe and viola, flute and viola, bassoon and cello, bassoon and viola, two cellos, and two bassoons.
I wrote this piece so that musicians can have the pleasure of communicating with one another in real time, which is a necessity in times of social isolation. In the time that follows the Covid-19 pandemic (whenever that may be), this piece could be performed in a way that injects freedom in the sections marked “allow for random cacophony.”.
This piece is available on this page of the IMSLP.
November 22 UPDATE: Here is a video of a Zoom performance of the version for violin and viola played by musicians in Michigan and Texas.
Here's a performance by clarinetist Jade Garcia and violinist Emily Rumney
The Schoen Duo has made three videos: one with the music alone, one with the music and pages from the book, and one with the addition of the spoken text! This link will get you to all three.
2025 UPDATE! Now for String Quartet.
Ladder of Escape for Four Bassoons
The Jumping Competition
The Collar

May 5, 2017
This is an adaptation of a story by Hans Christian Andersen for solo cello (or solo viola, or solo bassoon, or solo clarinet or solo bass clarinet) with narration. You can find the music on this page of the IMSLP.
Here is a performance by Barbara Hedlund and Ronald Hedlund:
Woodwind Quintet No. 2
This ten-minute-long piece for woodwind quintet would be interesting and entertaining for school-age children (and hopefully adults and wind players as well). The four movements relate to the four winds: west, east, south, and north. The cover art is a painting by my mother, June Fine.
The music can be found on this page of the IMSLP, and you watch and listen to a performance here:
Three Pieces for Bassoon and Strings or Bassoon and Piano
This is an version of the piece below for bassoon and strings. It can be played as a piece of chamber music or as a piece for bassoon and string orchestra. You can listen to a recording of Silvery Wings with bassoon and piano here, Pomegranates Pink for bassoon and strings here, and Primroses Pale with bassoon and strings here.

May, 2003
The music is available from Subito. You can find the score and parts for bassoon and strings here. There is also a version for bassoon and piano that you can find here.
Woodwind Quintet

September, 2002
You can listen to a recording here of the first movement, the second movement, and the third movement. The music is available from Subito.
Three Pieces for Bassoon and Piano
These pieces are based on lines from Walter de la Mare's "Bunches of Grapes" (that has my name in it). You can listen to a performance by bassoonist Kimberly Kelley and pianist Rachel Jensen: Pomagranantes Pink, Primroses Pale, and Silvery Wings. The music is available from Subito.

Study for Woodwind Quartet
Monday Waltz for flute, oboe, bassoon, and piano

July 7, 2009
This was originally a monody, which became a kind of parallel monody, and then grew into a four-instrument waltz."Monody" looks so much like "Monday" that I simply decided to change the name, since this piece no longer has anything to do with monody. Or with Monday either, for that matter.
The score and parts, as well as an audio recording are available here.
Avez vous des bonbons for 2 clarinets and bassoon

This is a transcription for two clarinets and bassoon of a piece by the same name that I wrote for two violins and cello. You can listen to it here.
The string version is available from Subito. You can find the clarinet and bassoon parts here.
(You could certainly play the piece with two clarinets and cello instead of bassoon.)
Duo for Oboe and Bassoon

This piece is now available from Amoris International in a version for oboe d'amore and bass oboe. You can go here for a PDF (the original setting for oboe and bassoon comes second in the PDF), and here to listen to a computer-generated recording.
This piece also, I recently learned, works nicely for violin and cello!
