Mary Jane Waltz

The Mary Jane, a peanut-butter and molasses taffy, was invented by the Boston-based candy maker Charles N. Miller in 1914. In 1989 the Miller candy company was sold to Stark Candy, and the recipe and rights for the Mary Jane were sold to the NECCO candy company. NECCO made the candy in Revere, Massachusetts until the factory closed abruptly in July of 2018. This "Boston" waltz (with its slight hesitations) seems appropriate to celebrate the Boston-based treat.

Transcription: Pachelbel Canon for Viola Solo or Violin Solo
It is always useful to have a solo version of the Pachelbel Canon, particularly during wedding season. This G-major transcription sounds best on the viola, but it works on the violin as well (in the original key).

Transcription: Maria Theresia von Paradis Siciliene for String Quartet

This is the piece that cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason played at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19, 2018. It is definitely not by Maria Theresa von Paradis (those Kreisler-like early 20th-century harmonies give it away). The piece was "discovered" by the violinist Samuel Dushkin, and published in 1924. I imagine that it will become an often-requested wedding piece, so, inspired by Kanneh-Mason's beautiful playing, I made this arrangement for string quartet.

Birthday Piece No. 10 for Viola d'amore and Piano

Updated November 21, 2018 (with a real viola d'amore part, now that my instrument is back from the shop!)
Fifty-nine measures for fifty-nine years. Around the time of my birthday my viola d'amore was in the shop getting some repairs done, so this year's birthday piece can be played on either viola or viola d'amore. You can get the music on this page of the IMSLP.
